I'd almost forgotten what Joy feels like.

A bubbling, vibrant energy infused with dynamism. Joy - a slice of excitement mixed with happiness, served with a drizzle of pride and notes of inspiration. Mine arrives with a shot of motivation - the good stuff - never mixed with frenzy.

That side of me disappeared three months ago. Replaced by someone wondering who she might have been had 11/06 gone differently. The election changed me more than any other world event I can remember. I lost my drive, inspiration, and creativity. Essential components of who I am vanished overnight, and after weeks of living in a desolate gray fog, I doubted they would return.

Until last Thursday.

The Catalyst for Change

I participated in the Economic Boycott on 02/28, but shutting down isn't my style. While disapproval must be heard, the best way to complain is to create. I'm about filling cups, not draining them in protest.

A post in my news feed reframed the boycott as a "Local Share and Trade Day" - a yes/and scenario that rekindled my creative flame. It proposed that alongside the boycott, we focus on giving what we have to our local community without engaging in commerce.

Finally - an opportunity to ACT. To contribute meaningfully and personally.

Community Focus

As federal support structures dissolve, our immediate community becomes critical. We've let local networks fade with the rise of technology, barely noticing their disappearance. That single post - reframing rejection as active embracing of something more immediate and tangible - reconnected me with purpose.

With minimal warning, I announced free 30-minute sessions to anyone interested, all day Friday. My schedule filled overnight.

I hadn't felt this energized in months.


The Body-Mind Connection

What I experienced firsthand reflects what emerging research consistently shows: our emotional state directly impacts our physical expression. In his book "Outlive," Dr. Peter Attia discusses how chronic stress and emotional distress alter not just internal biochemistry but observable movement patterns and posture.

When I lost my joy, my body language transformed completely. My typically upright posture collapsed. I found myself crossing my arms more frequently—a classic defensive posture that psychologists link to emotional self-protection. My characteristically long stride and rapid gait slowed to an amble, physically expressing my withering drive. Perhaps most telling was how my voice lost its tenor, sentences trailing off into mumbles—the literal fading of self-expression.

These weren't conscious choices but embodied emotion—our inner landscape sculpting outer expression. Dr. Attia's research shows these changes create feedback loops that reinforce emotional states through altered breathing, hormones, and neural pathways.

The Experience & Lessons

Serving everyone who walked through my door—helping them find freedom through movement without economic transaction—proved transformative. Our work helps people fully inhabit their bodies beyond physical fitness, creating authentic community connections and rebuilding the strength we need to face what's ahead.

You can't give everything away forever. My first in-person appointment was a no-show (when something is free, some see no value)

. But the original first booking came from Columbia, and when I reached out, the desire for connection was heartfelt.

Finding Purpose

The Ikigai diagram describes four key elements: What you love, what you're good at, what serves the world, and what you can be paid for. Finding that sacred intersection transforms work into purpose and joy. We need more of this potent mixture to infuse ourselves and our world with the energy we need now.

So this Sunday, I ask you: How can you share the best parts of yourself more freely? How can you contribute your unique skills to support and build your community?

When you find the answer, you've found your bridge back to joy.

This Week's Practice: Resistance as Path to Resilience

This week's mini-workout directly addresses this mind-body connection through a principle central to both physical and emotional resilience: productive resistance.

The 10-minute routine uses two mini-bands placed strategically on the limbs—far from your core. This is intentional. By creating resistance at your extremities, the bands force your body to recruit core muscles to stabilize and respond. This mirrors an essential truth that applies beyond movement: strength develops through challenge.

When we work against forces—physical or circumstantial—our bodies and minds build greater awareness and capacity. Pressure at the periphery ultimately strengthens the center.

As you move through the sequence, notice how engagement travels from your hands and feet inward, creating whole-body integration. This activation pattern teaches your nervous system that external resistance can be channeled into internal power.

This isn't just exercise—it's a physical reminder that resistance, when properly engaged, creates a more capable, powerful version of ourselves. As Dr. Attia notes in "Outlive," this adaptive response to challenge is fundamental to both physical and psychological health.
