Under Pressure

Last Thursday, I gave a talk at Pilgrim’s Way Bookstore in Carmel called Resilient by Design.

We gathered among garden statues in the dome to explore how stress lives in the body—not just as tension, but as strategy.
Your nervous system is predictive. It doesn’t wait for something to go wrong; it prepares
in advance for what it expects.

A spine that stiffens. A breath that stays high. A core that braces instead of supports. These aren’t flaws. They’re brilliant adaptations built for protection.

But when the environment changes—and your system doesn’t recalibrate—those same strategies become symptoms.

And that’s where proprioceptive training comes in.

You don’t have to force a release. You just need to give the system new input.
The body
wants to reorganize. You just need to speak its language.

This week, I’m sharing two free practices that help you do exactly that.

Floss Angeles

A 15-minute full-body nervous system warm-up using a theraband for
dural flossing—a gentle way to mobilize the fascia surrounding your spinal cord. This one’s ideal before movement, teaching, or after long hours at a screen.

Under Pressure

A focused compression breathing practice using a looped theraband. Learn how to create pressure
inside the body—not through clenching, but through containment. Deepen your breath, stabilize your core, and invite your nervous system to settle.

Some of our greatest strengths are also our most persistent saboteurs. Excitement and anxiety ride the same current. Care becomes control. And for me—being true to my word can sometimes harden into a dogged rigidity, an insistence on honoring commitments even when the circumstances have clearly shifted. Reader ,maybe you've felt that too. That’s the shadow side of commitment—and this moment craves more light. I started this newsletter in 2016, sending out enthusiastic emails on breathwork and...

Do you ever have those fleeting moments where it feels like you are living outside of space and time? When you’re lost in creative flow, or consumed by a passion project?
