I came to while striding through my kitchen. A dirty coffee cup in one hand, the other holding a single sneaker and my cellphone—still open to an Atlantic article that had caught my eye in the news feed. Abruptly back in my body, I had no idea where I was headed or what I planned to do, but it was clear that the hour I’d set aside for working out had been decimated down to 15 minutes. And honestly, vacuuming seemed like a better use of my time at that point. Self Care Score: Incompleted chores – 1 / Workout – Zero Have you noticed how hard it’s gotten to concentrate lately? Between the headlines pinging our phones, the constant pressure to carry on “as normal,” and the rising hum of collective anxiety… it’s no wonder our brains feel scrambled. Even when we do get sleep, it doesn’t always restore us. That endless mental circling—half-formed worries, to-do lists that reorganize themselves at 3 a.m., and the doomscroll spiral of cheap dopamine—leaves us foggy and fatigued. We're overstimulated and underfocused, not to mention completely overwhelmed, with no relief in sight. In this frazzled state, it’s impossible to be effective—and yet focused, effective action is exactly what we need. It can feel like you’re trapped in an endless loop. But there is an antidote. And it doesn’t come from a supplement or a settings tweak. Move your body. Consistently. Without distractions. A 30–45 minute session of intentional, uninterrupted movement can work wonders—especially if it’s done away from screens. And not all movement is the same. Aerobic activity like walking, dancing, or cycling helps clear mental debris and boost brain chemistry. Strength and resistance work builds postural awareness and healthy stress tolerance. Mindful mobility and breathwork re-regulate the nervous system. And rhythmic, skill-based practices—like martial arts or choreography—train you to stay present, adapt in real time, and reconnect to your body’s intelligence. Yes, recorded video classes can deliver these benefits. But let’s be honest: most of us aren’t doing them the way we once did. We press play… and then pause to check a text. In a world already saturated with screen fatigue, our best intentions get hijacked. Those self-guided classes that were once nourishing are now just more tabs open in a chaotic mental browser. A new client recently came to me looking for a fitness routine that truly fit—something effective, enlivening, and sustainable. I asked her what had worked in the past. She listed bellydance, HIIT, burlesque… Then she paused and said, “Honestly? Anything done with a group of people.” That was the key. Sweating with a community isn’t just efficient—it’s medicinal. It’s nervous system co-regulation in action. The shared rhythm. The collective commitment. The energy of many bodies moving toward a common goal. It’s the difference between a pile of dirt and a sand mandala. We’re not meant to go it alone. And we don’t need to. Back in 2020, pre-recorded classes were lifelines. We had all the time in the world to fill, and our screens became portals to inspiration and learning. But the energy has shifted. These days, showing up live—whether in person or on Zoom—makes all the difference.
